FAQ

Q: Is mexico safe?

A: Yes. But like everywhere else, there are risks and you need to have your wits about you. Your tour will be led by two experienced guides who are familiar with Baja and know the language. Your safety and enjoyment are our first priority.

Q: What kind of vehicle do i need?

A: We welcome all off road capable, high clearance vehicles for any of our adventures. Please see all vehicle requirements here. We’ve also provided a list of recommended items for your vehicle. Make sure your vehicle has been serviced and any issues addressed before the run. Little issues on pavement turn into big issues offroad.

Q: What do i need to bring?

A: A valid passport, cash, and a credit card. DRIVE participants will need small bills or Mexican pesos to pay highway tolls.

Q: What should i not bring?

A: Firearms or drugs. Period. Make sure you have absolutely no firearms, bullets, cartridges, drugs, or drug paraphernalia on you or in your vehicle. Having any of these can land you in Mexican jail and put the whole group at risk. Leave it at home. If we discover that you have brought any prohibited items you may be asked to leave the tour immediately and you will not be issued a refund.

Q: What navigation equipment do i need?

A: We will provide you with a .gpx file with the route. We use LeadNav on our iPads. If you will be using a different setup, make sure it can read .gpx files including waypoints and markers.

Q: DO I NEED SPECIAL INSURANCE?

A: Yes! Baja Bound is our preferred Mexican insurance provider. DRIVE participants are required to purchase Mexican auto insurance for the duration of their stay. Your U.S. auto insurance will not cover your vehicle in Mexico and operating a vehicle without insurance that meets minimum liability requirements in Mexico is illegal. You don’t want to end up like this guy. Liability is all that is required, but we recommend purchasing full coverage which will cover up to $1000 for a tow.

Q: HOW Many passengers can i TAKE?

A: The per vehicle price includes driver and one passenger. There is a charge for any additional passengers to cover meals, lodging and logistics.

Q: what happens if i break something or get stuck?

A: First, know it happens and don’t freak out. We don’t leave anyone behind, period. We will work with you to fix whatever you have broken or get you unstuck. Once you are moving again, if you do not wish to continue on the tour, you will get an escort to the nearest paved road and you can head home. If your vehicle is inoperable, you can ride with us and we will tow you across the border to California where you can arrange for a tow to your ultimate location. There is a base charge of $850 to cross on our trailer plus an additional charge based on mileage. If your vehicle is inoperable and you don’t want to continue on the tour, you are responsible for securing a tow to and across the border at your own expense. No refunds are given because of breakdowns.

Q: How long does it take to cross the border?

A: It depends. Crossing into Mexico is generally a matter of minutes. The return crossing can vary from minutes to hours. We monitor border crossing times and attempt to minimize wait time. Know that it is possible that it will take a substantial amount of time to cross, especially on Sundays and holidays.

Q: What if we get stopped by the police or at a military checkpoint?

A: Be polite, follow their instructions, and don’t leave your wallet in the vehicle if you get out.

Q: Where do we get gas?

A: We build gas stops into our tours. You are responsible for having a full tank at the beginning of the run. One spare 5-gallon gas can is required for all trips of 3 or more days. Do not fill up spare gas cans prior to crossing the border, we will fill them in Mexico. We strongly suggest bringing extra octane booster as some gas stations do not carry premium gas

Q: what’s your alcohol policy?

A: If we believe you or your passenger are impaired by drugs or alcohol, you will not be allowed to continue on the run and no refund will be given. Just say no, at least until you’re done driving.

Q: WHAT ARE THE “RULES OF THE ROAD” OFF-ROAD?

A: We will have a drivers’ meeting at the beginning of each run to review the route and rules. The most important thing is to be safe and follow directions from your guides. Generally, you are responsible for the truck behind you, you must call out any significant hazards that have not already been called out, and you must hold any turns until the vehicle behind can see you. If you stop along the trail, do it in a safe place where you can pull off and call it out. There is no passing without asking, tailgating, or other behavior that puts you and others at risk. Always drive within your capabilities and if you need assistance, ask. We will cover this and more at the drivers’ meeting.

Q: CAN I BRING MY DOG?

A: Usually yes, but some of our hotel partners are a little stricter than others so please let us know in advance. Also make sure you bring your dogs tags and some paperwork from last vet visit to avoid any potential issues crossing back.

Q: i am allergic to or I don’t eat (fill in the blank).

A: No problem. Let us know in advance and we will accommodate your dietary needs and preferences as best we can.

Q: WHAT should i wear?

A: Dress comfortably and bring a sweatshirt or sweater as temperatures can vary with altitude and time of day. We also suggest closed-toe, comfortable shoes.
